He has harbored ill feelings towards Fortunato for a long time already, although showing only his good side to him. The story’s two central characters depict contrasting attributes that contribute to the themes of revenge, betrayal, imprudence, and death. It shows how retribution could lead to vengeance with death as the final option. The concept of death dangles from the beginning of the story until the end, which is not only about the death of one of the lead characters, but of the nobleman’s family members. Betrayal is also a central theme in the story as the narrator lured the trusting individual to check on a new batch of Amontillado, which was actually bait just so he could fulfill his evil plans. All throughout the story, it was never revealed what these remarks were, but which apparently wounded the narrator’s ego so much that he wanted to exact vengeance on the person. It tells of one man’s hatred against an unsuspecting individual, whom the narrator has been plotting to kill because of alleged insults the individual made towards him (Baraban 47). Edgar Allan Poe’s short story, The Cask of Amontillado, is a confession of a murder that occurred 50 years prior, whereby the narrator was never caught or tried despite his wrongdoing.

We need to worry not only about climate emissions, but also the persistent plastics that do not break down, do not ever go away, and consequently are showing up everywhere in the environment and in our bodies. To argue about the climate-changing emissions of plastic versus glass, or compare the fuel used to truck these wines around in different containers, ignores the fact that we have more than one thing to worry about. Microplastics have previously been detected every place in the human body scientists have looked for them: Breast milk. It’s only been a matter of days since we got the news that microplastics are now being detected in human testis and semen. “No way around it, boxes are significantly better for the planet, even with a plastic liner.”įolks. “The carbon footprint is about a tenth of the emissions for the production of four single-use bottles, not even taking into consideration weight and transport,” an importer is quoted as saying. This is an argument you hear repeatedly: that plastic containers are supposedly preferable to glass because of the environmental footprint. A New York Times article out earlier this week titled “ 10 Boxed Wines That Are Really Good, Seriously” was touting the environmental benefits of buying wine in boxes over wine in glass. I knew nothing about pearls when I started reading this book now I’m fascinated by them. One is the depth of research and detail that Lowell includes. Two things make Pearl Cove stand out from the run of the mill romantic suspense story. Their passion rekindles in the midst of their attempts to stay alive, find out who killed Len, and salvage the fabulous black pearls for which Len was murdered. When Hannah calls him to Australia in the wake of Len’s murder, Archer finds that instead, Len has made Hannah’s life hellish. Archer hoped that Hannah’s sweetness would be a tonic for the bitter Len. Ten years ago, Archer Donovan fell in love with Hannah McGarry, but he let her go because she was with his half-brother, Len. From the first page, I was drawn into a suspenseful plot, fascinating information about pearls and the pearl industry, and most of all, the larger-than-life characters of the Donovan family. Pearl Cove is the first Elizabeth Lowell book I’ve read, but it certainly won’t be my last. |
